But my favorite Serbian dish ever was Šopska salad! We often joked that Brazilians took over the hostel as it was majority Brazilians. So that meant more Portuguese practice for me Almost all of them came to Serbia to quarantine for 14 days in order to enter their final destination; most of them going somewhere in the EU — Spain and Italy being the most common destinations. A lot of them were going to get their Italian or Portuguese citizenship (because of the worsening situation in Brazil), and some were going to study or work. I hardly met any Brazilians that were there just as a tourist. Because they stayed for 2 weeks at a time, I got to spend a lot of time with them and even lived with some in the same dorm, doing everything together everyday. It was a lot of fun and I miss those times. Had it not been for COVID, they wouldn’t have needed to come to Serbia to quarantine and we wouldn’t have met. Then I went to a Brazilian café and met the owner, a Brazilian woman married to a Serbian man, and then I met even more Brazilians there. I ended up spending a lot of time at that café and got to develop friendships with even more Brazilians. The 1907 location is by far the best and one of my favorite places in the city. It’s 3 stories high, providing plenty of space to work from, as well as Wi-Fi, plugs, and lots of coffee and food options. Even if you don’t need to work, I recommend visiting this spot just for the beauty of size of the space. So the dishes piled high, I had to pee really bad (toilets were blocked off), and I was sticky and gross from a hot summer day. We had to wake up around 6am to catch a bus to Montenegro, so around 3:30am we went to a 24 hour supermarket to pick up two water jugs each so we could hydrate and shower the old school way. I wanted to jump, too, despite my fear of heights because I thought the size was manageable even for me. But I was so wrong. The 10-year-old Albanian boy encouraged me and he held my hand and counted to 3 (numerous times) as I tried to jump with him, but I couldn’t do it. Eventually Ilai came down and held my hand, and made me look at him as he made me jump with him. A policeman started yelling at us in Albanian, and checked our ID’s. Because we couldn’t understand him, he showed us how to get out of there by pointing and motioning with his hands. Can’t be that hard to find our way, right? We followed his directions but found ourselves in an even worse situation than before. Fighting through more thorn bushes and climbing up (sliding down) unstable terrain, I started to think we were never going to make it out of there. She shipped it to different countries when she went overseas. How freaking badass is that! For lunch we enjoyed a local homemade Icelandic meal prepared by an amazing Icelandic cook. This tour is unique in that the former tour company owner’s aunt is the amazing cook and hostess. Even after selling the company, his aunt still opens up her home to tourists. I don’t believe you’ll find another tour where the owner’s aunt will make you a home cooked meal. Gabriel and I shared a lot in common with our mothers, and all three of us absolutely love food and trying new things so we had a great time. We shared the Icelandic platter, which consisted of minke whale, smoked puffin, arctic char, and horse carpaccio. I never imagined I’d ever eat whale or horse, but here we are. It was all fantastic! When I woke up, I met the other girl in my dorm named Alex. An extroverted girl from NY, she was alone in the room her entire stay so she was so excited to have someone in the room for a change. It was her last evening in Iceland, so we made plans to do something together later in the evening. My first tour of my trip was none other than a FOOD tour, of course! What’s a foodie to do?! With very little time I felt pulled to go on a food tour to get a better sense of Icelandic cuisine in just a couple hours. I chose the Reykjavik Food Lovers Tour, which was a bit pricey but — this is Iceland. We had everything from lamb hotdogs and lamb soup to Artctic char, fermented Greenland shark, and pollack fish cod. My favorite? The hotdogs. I was so annoyed, but my mother claims that a layover actually helps you not feel tired, because you have to get up to switch planes, but I disagree. I prefer one continuous flight so I can make my best attempt at falling asleep — and staying asleep. I slept as much as I could on both flights, and once we landed I actually felt fine. So maaaybe she’s right? I had booked the flight to Newark because it was cheaper than to JFK. To me, Newark was synonymous with NYC so I didn’t even realize the airport is in another state until we landed. Wow — I really did zero planning before my departure. I never want to fly into Newark again because the process of getting into the city, with all my luggage, was a real PITA (Pain In The Ass). My mom also stayed up all night, making me some kimbap for my flight. Kimbap is a (Korean) seaweed rice roll that is perfect for picnics and travel, but laborious to make; from julienning to cooking; from spreading to lining; from rolling to slicing — nothing like putting together a simple sandwich or burrito. At 10:30pm last night, my mom offered to make some for me. Given the time of day (or night) and the required labor, I told her there’s no need – but she insisted. So at 10:45pm, she hopped in her car to grab some cucumber from the store and slaved away all night. During the pandemic, I was (and still am) really passionate about supporting local businesses as they were (and still are) struggling to keep their businesses afloat. I made it my priority to support them by not only patronizing them, but by spreading the word to my friends via word of mouth and on my Instagram. Throughout the year+ of the pandemic, I developed many relationships, friendships and connections with business owners in the Portland food scene because of Instagram.
